Yarn & Colors

You will need five colors. Any soft DK or sport weight yarn gives the best stitch definition for amigurumi.

A – White Off-white
Head, body
B – Black True black
Ears, eye patches, arms, legs
C – Blush Pink Petal pink
Flower petals, cheek blush
D – Pale Yellow Buttercup
Flower center
E – Green Leaf green
Flower stem
Color Note The eye patches are crocheted separately in Black (Color B) and sewn onto the White head before inserting safety eyes through the center of each patch. This creates the classic panda look with dark circles framing big shiny eyes.

Flower – Pink Daisy

Petals (Color C – Blush Pink)

The flower is worked as a flat piece with individual petals radiating from a central ring.

Foundation ring: ch 4, join with sl st.

Round 1 (center ring): ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join with sl st [8]

→ Now work 8 petals, one into each sc of the center ring:

Each petal: (sl st into next sc, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st back into same base sc) – repeat x 8

→ This creates 8 rounded petals. Pull the center ring tight.

Fasten off, leaving a tail. Weave in petal ends neatly on the back.

Flower Center (Color D – Pale Yellow)

Round 1: 6 sc in MR [6]

Round 2: inc x 6 [12]

Rounds 3–4: sc around [12]

Stuff very lightly. Fasten off. Sew the yellow button center onto the middle of the pink petal ring, covering the base of all petals.

Stem (Color E – Green)

Ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across [9 sc].

→ For a rounder stem: 4 sc in MR [4], sc around for 10 rounds [4]. Fasten off.

Sew the stem to the back of the flower, then sew or pin the flower to the panda’s front at rounds 8–12 of the body, between the arms.

Simpler Flower Option Work 6 sc in MR for center (Color D), join Color C and work (ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, sl st back to center ring) x 6 for 6 petals. This gives a smaller, simpler daisy that is perfect for beginners.

Assembly

Pin all parts before sewing. Check proportions from a distance — the panda’s head should be large and dominant relative to the body, giving a baby animal proportion.

  1. Eye Patches: Sew black oval patches to the front of the head at rounds 12–15, centered on each side of the face nose area. Insert safety eyes through the center of each patch. Secure washers.
  2. Embroider Face: Using 3 strands of black floss, embroider a small oval nose and a gentle “w” or “Y” mouth shape below. Apply blush to cheeks with a cotton swab.
  3. Ears: Sew the two black round ears to the top of the head at rounds 3–5, spaced 8–10 stitches apart. They should sit upright and slightly apart.
  4. Head to Body: Center the head on top of the body, face pointing forward. Sew all the way around firmly through multiple stitches.
  5. Arms: Sew to the sides of the body at rounds 3–5 from the top. Angle them forward and slightly inward as if cradling the flower. Both arms should frame the flower from each side.
  6. Flower & Stem: Attach the stem to the body front at rounds 8–10. Sew the flower at the top of the stem. Tack each arm gently against the sides of the stem so it appears the panda is holding it.
  7. Legs: Sew to the bottom of the body, pointing forward and slightly outward. Space them 4–6 stitches apart. The panda should sit squarely and upright without toppling.
  8. Final Check: Tug every piece gently. Re-stitch anything loose. Trim and weave in all yarn ends securely.

Finishing & Care

Give your panda a gentle reshape once assembled. The head should be large and very round. The body is compact and slightly smaller, giving a roly-poly baby panda silhouette. The arms can be tacked lightly to the flower stem for a posed “holding” look.

Color Variations: Try a brown and cream palette for a teddy bear, grey and white for a koala, or orange and white for a fox variant. The construction is identical.

Flower Variations: Swap the pink daisy for a red rose (work a tight spiral), a sunflower (yellow petals, brown center), or a tiny bouquet of three mini flowers.

Washing: Hand wash gently in cool water with mild soap. Reshape while damp and allow to air dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.

Safety Note: Contains safety eyes. Not suitable for children under 3. For infants, embroider all features using yarn or floss instead.
